Pretty good year

Dig through your couch cushions, your purse, or the floor of your car and look at the year printed on the first coin you find. What were you doing that year?

I found this coin in my draw at work. It is dated 2011.

What was I doing in that year?

In that year I became a consultant – probably my biggest achievement so far. I started medical school in 1994 and it took me 17 years to get to that point. Four years later I am still learning. It’s funny – like driving – you are not really driving until you have your licence and you are on your own. And it’s when you start learning a whole other set of rules. I have enjoyed being a consultant – it hard hard work but worth the effort and toil it took to get here. I still have another mountain climb with regard to work but I guess it is a step at a time.

I graduated that year. Another achievement. It took me sometime to finish my MSc. I started in 2007 but I stopped part way through due to ill health. If it was not for my father’s wisdom and encouragement I am not sure I would have completed it. I am eternally grateful. The next thing is a PhD. It will be sometime before I embark on this but I will do in this lifetime I am sure. I love studying, it is rather all consuming but deeply satisfying.

In 2011 turned 35 and I went on holiday to Spain with my sisters for the first time to celebrate my birthday.

We spent a 5 days in Barcelona. It was perhaps one of the best holidays I have ever had the privilege to go on. We just had fun, in a way only sisters can. We laughed, we ate good food, visited many interesting places. Most of all I just learnt to relax and let my hair down. I think I learnt to just be myself and enjoy being me. I learnt to be comfortable in my own skin in a way I had never been before.

It was pretty good year.
